As you can see from the screenshots, the work area is divided into several areas, including a visual editor, in which you will edit the effects of your future texture, and a 2D viewport, and 3D. It’s all customizable, which is good. A feature of the program is that it integrates into the game engines Unreal Engine 4, Unity3D, 3D editors 3Ds Max, Maya and others for more fruitful work. Therefore, you can easily transfer the created image here from Photoshop and apply the desired effects here. In general, the tool is very interesting and will find interested people.
And finally, I would like to say that the program works with the DirectX 10 API, and therefore does not support Windows XP, it is understandable – the last century. And besides, it works only on x64 operating systems, starting in Windows Vista.
The huge library of brushes available in the program should be noted separately. Brushes leave behind patterns of individual particles, and strokes are recognized by the program as curves. Thanks to this, the user can change the shape of the model after applying the textures. Pre-made brushes from the built-in Substance Painter library are great for creating procedural effects such as rust, dirt, cracked bullet marks, and scuffs.
The Substance Painter workspace consists of a window with a three-dimensional model, a brush selector, a property setting menu, a texture control panel and a material type selection window. When working with materials and textures, you can use layers. Since all interface elements are “independent”, they can be freely scaled and moved within and outside the stage. Objects are rendered using NVIDIA Iray technology, which helps to improve the model using additional post-effects.
The textures that Substance Designer makes are active. This means that in the present tense format, it is possible to:
- edit the image;
- enrich the image with different effects.
Be sure to pay attention to the rather high system requirements of Substance Painter, as well as to the “biting” price tag typical for all professional programs of this kind.
